Preparing for an Expedition

The Antarctic is the coldest place on earth. Exposed to strong winds, cold temperatures, and ever-changing conditions. Expeditions in these areas call for durable equipment that can withstand the toughest of climates. Using skis and sleds as the main way of transportation, gear that does not restrict freedom of movement or trap excessive heat to the body are just as important.

Last but not least, equipment warm enough to keep the cold out is needed. After all the Antarctic is the coldest place on earth. This expedition crew were equipped with a range of Klättermusen gear for battling whatever the Antarctic threw at them.

The Antarctic Quest 21

The Antarctic Quest 21 is an expedition that commemorated the iconic explorer and leader, Sir Ernest Shackleton, at the 100th anniversary of his final expedition to the Antarctic. The Antarctic Peninsula was partially crossed to undertake essential science and exploration. During a month installation of equipment and observations for researching UV exposure, micro plastics and climate change was collected whilst man hauling over the Antarctic Peninsula. A journey moving across challenging terrain in the harshest conditions out there. According to Paul Hart, Expedition Leader of Antarctic Quest 21, the conditions faced during the expedition were some of the most severe he has ever experienced in over 30 years of adventure travel and expeditions. The team was exposed to Katabatic windstorms, with winds exceeding 80 knots. These winds carry spindrift in the form of ice needles powerful enough to cut through both skin and most types of clothing.

Our ski-hauling gear was incredibly robust with the Brede jacket and Freke Salopette being the perfect answer to everything the Antarctic threw at us, both in terms of days being warm and days being frigid.

Equipment for polar climate

When moving across the Antarctic Peninsula on skis the team wore Brede 2.0 Jackets and Freke 2.0 Pants. Our sturdiest shell layer, designed with special emphasis on winter tours and expeditions. For staying warm during the coldest days, the crew was equipped with our high quality down jackets accompanied with synthetic insulted jackets for layering. Iving 2.0 is an extremely warm 750+ fill power down jacket that is designed for extreme weather expeditions and fitted for Arctic utility. In this expedition, it was truly put to the test. To keep heads and hands warm they wore the Mysse Hat and Greppet Mitts.

This equipment enabeld the expedition crew to operate in the hugely difficult conditions of the Antarctic. After a month of man hauling over the ice and fighting the harsh conditions, the expedition was finalized, and the crew could return back home safe and sound.
